The Institute of Gastroenterology, Tokyo Women's Medical University has made efforts regarding pain management palliative surgical treatment and the promotion of home care medicine in treating terminal cancer patients since 2002. Pain management: We made a "Pain Management Manual" based on the WHO Cancer Pain Relief Program to unify the pain management in our institute and adopted CT-guided splanchnic nerve block. Palliative surgical treatment: We adopted not only pharmacotherapy but also palliative surgical treatment such as bypass operation, PEG, PTEG, and stenting for obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Practice of home care medicine: We promote home care medicine for terminal cancer patients in stable condition. A palliative care team was established in Tokyo Women's Medical University in October 2005.
