Six streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were each implanted with a Bio-AEP containing MIN6-cells, but without any immunosuppression therapy. Three STZ-induced diabetic rats were implanted with a diffusion chamber without the MIN6-cells, as a sham operation. In three of the six STZ-diabetic rats with a Bio-AEP, fasting blood glucose levels were normalized immediately and remained within normal range until the 32th week after implantation (good control). In the other three rats, with Bio-AEPs, the blood glucose level rose gradually from the 24th week after implantation (poor control). The fasting blood glucose levels in the three rats in the sham operation group were higher than 600 mg/dl, immediately after the implantation. Thirty-five weeks after implantation, the Bio-AEPs were removed from the nine diabetic rats. Subsequently, the blood glucose levels of the three rats in the good control groups, rose quickly, whereas those of the rats in the sham operation and poor control groups, were sustained above 600 mg/dl, which was as high as the level before Bio-AEP removal. The Bio-AEP removed from the rats in the good control group were intact. In contrasta, in the poor control group, either the nuclepore membrane or the silicon ring had been damaged and the MIN6-cells had disapperared due to lysis. No relationship was found between the l0ocation of the Bio-AEP in the abdominal cavity and the blood glucose levels.
