In Japan, medical students are only observers, while those doing clerkships are considered important members of a ward team. Students doing a clerkship are expected to know about community medicine and to volunteer for social work, and to learn about medical ethics, economy and malpractice prevention, etc. This knowledge and experience allows them to become independent immediately after graduation. It is also characteristic to function within a team in which gradual change depends on individual knowledge and skill levels. The clerkship is useful for becoming aware of professionalism and responsibility, to a greater extent than gaining and skills. In the USA, the willingness to participate in medical education and instruction is also recognized as important for evaluating the abilities of doctors, and university committees give education high priority. Since patients in Japan are not accustomed to the participation of students, it would not be easy to introduce such a clerkship system. We must establish a management system in which patients accept the participation of students without anxiety. 内容記述 | We report the experience of clinical clerkships at Case Western Reserve University in the USA. In Japan, medical students are only observers, while those doing clerkships are considered important members of a ward team. Students doing a clerkship are expected to know about community medicine and to volunteer for social work, and to learn about medical ethics, economy and malpractice prevention, etc. This knowledge and experience allows them to become independent immediately after graduation. It is also characteristic to function within a team in which gradual change depends on individual knowledge and skill levels. The clerkship is useful for becoming aware of professionalism and responsibility, to a greater extent than gaining and skills.
